The forever-evolving music icon has kept us bobbing our heads to her wisely written lyrics and funky beats since Baduizm. Today, we honor her as she turns the big 4-0!

Mother. Lover. Fighter. Musician. Writer. Poet. Activist. Director. Visionary. Fashionista. The breeze in the night that you just can’t keep up with even if you tried.

Erykah Badu entered our hearts with the release of her debut album in 1997, showcasing her soulful blend of the beginning of neo-soul and fancy headwraps. Since then, she has released four studio albums, one live album and has made numerous television and film appearances.

The evolution of Erykah Badu as an individual, a musician and activist has influenced many people throughout the years. Her lyrics, fashion and political messages (can we say ‘Window Seat’…?) has inspired each of us to think for ourselves rather than that of the “majority”.
