HHW goes behind the beats with ATL’s own Southside as he talks getting into the game and how he hooked up with Waka FLocka and Gucci Mane.

Notables:

“Bussin’ At ‘Em” – Waka Flocka Flame
“Two-Times” – Gucci Mane

How did you get into making music?
Man, my mom used to always put me on punishment for getting’ in trouble, so my uncle, he bought me a laptop one day, and it had Fruity Loops on it. I was like 13 or 14 years old, and I just started makin’ beats on it while on punishment.

How’d you meet Waka Flocka and get down with Brick Squad?
On the Southside; Waka and Gucci was in the little hood studio there, so I popped up with some beats. Who the Kid was like, “Put the beats on, man!” I put the beats on, and everybody in the studio was like, ‘Man, these beats hard!’ From then on, it’s been winnin’.

What are some of the records you’ve produced?
“Love The Gun Sounds,” “Bussin’ At ‘Em,” everything Who the Kid. I did Gucci “2-Times,” “B—- Get Up Off Me;” man, it’s a selection of records. OJ the Juiceman, we’d be all day doin’ that.

How would you describe your sound?
I try to take all the bad we used to do in the streets and put it in the music. So they might say it sound real evil, it sound real possessed. That’s just the sound we like – like it sound evil. That’s why it stick out, but it sound more like a movie – like a soundtrack.

How do you know when you’ve made a hot beat?
I might get chills in my body from listenin’ to the beat like, ‘Damn, this s— cold!’ But usually, when I’m in the studio, either Lex Luger there or Waka Flocka there or Who the Kid there, so I try to get the whole house to come down to the studio to come in and say, ‘Ay bruh, that’s one right there…’ That’s how I know when it’s one.

What else are you workin’ on right now?

I got an artist right now named Nino Cahoots – he’s actually on Brick Squad. I’m the one developing him. He’s me and Who the Kid’s artist. He hard, man! He gon’be trouble for a lotta these rappers, I promise you that!

Who else do you wanna work with?
I wanna work with Trey Songz, man! That’s a different feel from what I do. I make every type of record. I got a lotta stuff.

What should fans look out for next?

Look out for Waka next album; look out for Gucci album – I’m on all that. Waka and Gucci got an album together – I did most of that; Who the Kid album. Supposedly, I got somethin’ with Kanye West and Jay-Z on they album. I got a lotta stuff in the works right now, man. I got stuff everywhere. Mizzay, everyday all day!
