Straight from funny’s depths, HHW brings you Mr. Mike Epps as he discusses his career and what’s coming down the pike for Hip-Hop’s favorite comedian.

HHW: Are you at that point in your career where you feel that you’re about to turn a corner and we’ll be seeing more of Mike Epps?
MIKE: Oh yeah! I’ve been working at it hard for a long time, havin’ a good time at workin’ and havin’ a good time at workin’ at it hard. And I do feel like now I’m gettin’ an opportunity to show my fans that I have a lotta talent in a lotta different ways. I’m just ready to express it, you know what I mean? It’s been bottled up inside me; I’m ready to get off into this acting game so tough! That’s what I really can do. When I thought it was my time, it wasn’t His time for me to have it. I think now all the stars are linin’ up.
Was becoming an actor on the agenda from the beginning?
I’ve always been an actor; even as a kid I was an actor, as far as “acting” to get what I wanted and “acting” to get out of somethin’ that I didn’t wanna be in. So I think that my stand-up comedy kinda complimented that and brought me into it. It brought me to it a little bit quicker than I would’ve gotten if I would’ve come in as an actor.
Do you foresee yourself in any serious roles?
That’s what I’m tryina do now – break off into some serous roles. I’ve had some different roles, like in Don Cheadle’s movie Talk To Me with Taraji Henson. So I’ve had some little bitty small pieces where I’ve had an opportunity, but I really wanna stretch out widdit.
Can you see yourself writing and/or directing your own projects in the near future?
Oh yeah, it’s kinda like a 1-2-3 step wit’ me; when you work hard you end up building all these characters and storing a lotta stories and a lotta writings and a lotta ideas, so I’m hopin’ to one day write some real good, funny, creative stuff that I can direct and produce myself, and just have it as a Mike Epps brand.
