The newest member of “The Basketball Wives” brings new heat to an already hot series.
Season 3 of “Basketball Wives” brings a new addition to the group, and to some she is more than a handful. Wife of retired player and current scout, Speedy Claxton, Meeka is a self-made real estate entrepreneur that specializes in high-end transactions for some of the larger names in the sports and A-list crowds. Meeka has set her sights on the Miami market and is hitting South Beach to commit to a new outpost. No stranger to commitment, Meeka has been with her sweetheart since college. Their courtship and marriage has endured the ups and downs of a basketball league relationship and has given them 2 beautiful girls. As the new girl in town, Meeka has no allegiance to anyone…yet. But with a clear divide between the ladies, she will be forced to pick a side. Question is, will they accept her?
HHW: Congrats on the new gig. How did you become the new wife on the series?
MEEKA: I had a friend Jackie Paul who was in a relationship with Jason Richardson, so my name was given because I was a businesswoman. I got a call that said Shaunie O’Neal thought I would be a good fit, it was just a week or two before they started shooting. I said let me talk to my husband (Speedy Claxton). He said, “Hell, no. This is not a show about businesswomen.” But I told him that it was about women who are about business. We thought about it for two days and he said he would support me 100 percent.
How did it feel to be on there?
It wasn’t comfortable at first. I was a little nervous going into a relationship where people have already formed cliques and had alliances so it was weird not knowing where you fit and what the drama would be with them. It was nerve wracking.
Was the wardrobe, etc. that the other people had intimidating to you?
No, because I have the means to provide for myself. The climate was different though, because I’m from New York and Miami is very hot but I wanted to have an office in Miami because of my real estate business. I got into real estate because I knew a lot of people who were looking to buy property. I was always giving them advice, so I decided to get my license. I love what I do. I also have a magazine called Elite Access Magazine which is a luxury publication.
What are you like?
I’m fun but I am about business.
It has been said that you married your college sweetheart. We hear so much about bad marriage, can you talk about what makes yours special?
Being married to an athlete is not easy at all so when you find a good guy, not necessarily an athlete you need to make it work. We had problems right after college because being new to the league, he saw a whole lot of stuff as you can imagine. I had to stay true to me and I had to leave and later we both grew and got back together. I am a big believer in that you cannot force anything to work out. If you are meant to be with that person, you will be with that person. I am completely happy; I can’t complain. You have to be ready (for marriage). The women in these clubs just see the glamour.
What is your clothing style?
I like to buy clothes in New York. A lot of times what you see in a New York boutique is not anything you’ll see anywhere else. I’m a shoe whore. I love shoes and Chanel bags. I love Louis
Vuitton too. I love a high-heeled shoe; that’s what makes an outfit. I’ll wear a T-shirt with some shoes. I give away a lot of pairs, though.
