Venerable rap group A Tribe Called Quest has a fine reason to celebrate this time around! Their documentary Beats, Rhymes and Life which opened in the United States this past summer has struck many influential chords through out the hip hop community.

The documentary has received many great reviews, but most importantly it has been nominated for a Grammy. It was placed in the category of Long Form Music Video and Michael Rapaport couldn’t be happier. Rapaport tweeted “yo,i just found out [Beats, Rhymes and Life] got Nominated for a Grammy [for] “Best Long Form Video” Im tripping and appreciate all the support from TWEETLAND.” It will be the first ever hip hop group documentary to be nominated for a Grammy.
With the good news, did come some bad news. Band member Q-tip recently exposed his frustrations via Twitter when he announced that Beats, Rhymes and Life was snubbed by The Academy Awards. “Letting u know that the #OSCARS snubbed the tribe doc. Didn’t even include it in the 15 docs for voters to choose from,” he tweeted. Rapper Wale questioned “How does the Oscars snub a documentary so highly praised by our culture???”
With Kanye West recently being snubbed for Album of the Year at the upcoming Grammys, it seems as if the hip hop community needs to scream from mountaintops to raise awareness towards the neglect. But should we let award shows define us? Follow me and tweet me your thoughts @Lathleen .
