Singer Dwele chops it up with Hip Hop Weekly
Hip Hop/Neo-soul artist Dwele is currently promoting Greater Than One, his fifth studio album. The Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and producer created a blend of his usual style with an 80’s twist.
Q: What inspires you?
A: I’m inspired by everyday life. I‘m inspired by things that I go through; things that I see my friends and family going through. Sometimes I write from the perspective of situations that I want to be in. You know, I think if you use those three elements you can always use them to portray.
Q: What do you enjoy more, writing or performing?
A: That’s kinda hard. I always say that’s like asking do you prefer playing live basketball on the court or do you prefer playing 2k12 on the PlayStation. They are both fun in a different way, so it’s kinda hard to make a decision between the two of them. You can’t put the two against each other.
Q: If you had the choice, would you rather make your music in our time or take it to the past?
A: I would have to choose the past because I feel like my music has an old-school feel to it. Maybe the past was my era.(laughs) Maybe I was supposed to be out in the late 70s early 80s, I don’t know. In a way I love making music now because I can say that I am somewhat original, somewhat different from cats that are out there. So maybe I would say 2013, I like being original.
Q: What do you want the listener to feel when they listen to Dwele?
A: With every album I try to make all-purpose music. I try to make that soundtrack to your life. So ultimately that’s what I want to be. I want this music to be something that if you hear it 15-20 years from now it takes you back to that time. It makes you remember those days, because that’s what music does for me.
