“Best Thing I Never Had” and “Power” producer S1 sits down for an exclusive with HHW …
HHW: Tell us the purpose behind your new mixtape, Still Underrated Vol. 2.
SYMBOLYC ONE: Basically what I wanted to do was bridge the gap between me and my fans and people that are really inspired by my work. The mixtape is a collage of songs that I’ve produced over the last two years. I wanted to put ‘em all on one medium, and the reason for that is basically because a lot of people don’t know some of the joints I did. For instance, people know my commercial joints, Kanye’s “Power” and Beyonce’s “Best Thing I Never Had,” but they don’t know the Pusha T “Tick Tock” with Raekwon … so I just wanted to make people more familiar with my work.
HHW: You have an impressive collection of music, but your public profile is noticeably lowkey. Is this intentional?
SYMBOLYC ONE: To be honest, I think it’s really just my personality. I’ve been trying to do more, because as a producer in today’s industry you almost have to promote and market yourself as an artist. I’m getting more into social media and making videos and different visual things to showcase what I do.
HHW: I see you didn’t go with DJ Drama or Clue to host the mixtape. Tell us who you have hosting and why you made that decision.
SYMBOLYC ONE: I got my man Ryan Leslie hosting the mixtape, big ups to him. I’ve been knowing him for a while; we met while working on Watch the Throne with Jay and Kanye. Ryan was there with us the whole week, we vibed creatively and just kept in touch.
HHW: The last time we spoke, you said you had sent beats off to Jay-Z for an upcoming project. Since then, the Blueprint 4 rumors have started up. What do you know about that?
SYMBOLYC ONE: I do know that he’s just starting to work. I don’t know in depth how much work he’s done or what it’s for. I just sent him some more new joints last week. I’m hoping to lock in with him soon, because that’s always best — to see what kind of direction he’s trying to go. So hopefully that works out.
HHW: How does that work when you send beats to Jay – are you not allowed to send them to anyone else until he’s made his picks?
SYMBOLYC ONE: Nah, that’s actually how it is with Kanye. I’m legally signed as a producer to Kanye’s production company, Very Good Beats. He really gets first dibs on everything and whatever he leaves can go to anybody else.
