Rap veteran AZ recently caught up with HHW to discuss his forthcoming album Doe or Die II. During the interview he also reflected on his classic Sprite commercial with Nas and why it was such a special moment.
“I just caught a flashback because I always loved Double Trouble from the movie Wild Style and we was just reenacting that whole scene for the Sprite segment. I was young watching it, now I’m sittin’ here doin’ it. It just felt good at that particular time; it was like I made it. We was doin’ the Sprite commercial, The Firm album was gettin’ ready to drop, ‘Sugar Hill’ just went gold … it was just that zone where you could enjoy that era … that was the vibe.”
According to AZ, sequel to his classic debut is set to drop later this year.
“We Movin’” is out right now, so we’d like everybody to show their love. The video just dropped, so we’re gonna push that for about another month, then I’m gonna hit ‘em with one more single and video. Then after that I’m trying to push for an album release by October. Doe Or Die II, keep your eyes out.”
The iconic MC says he has zero worries about living up to the legacy of the original Doe Or Die.
“Hip hop is in a different zone right now, so there’s no pressure whatsoever. I’m from the lyrical era and music is my life so I’m always gonna stay in tune with that zone, so there’s no pressure. It’s all about steppin’ up from where I left off at.”
