This week’s top five of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Rap Songs include Macklemore for “Can’t Hold Us” (1) and “Thrift Shop” (2), along with Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera for “Feel This moment” (5). We don’t care. It’s no strange thing to see a pop artist collaborate with a hip hop artist. We’re used to hearing mainstream entertainment embrace sonically big pop/hip hop songs while overlooking the some of the most critically acclaimed hip hop records.
Though as consumers we can’t stand the process of how hip hop music is released and airplay dictated by executives who are completely out of touch with the streets and our culture. But if Miley Cyrus is collaborating with Pharrell Williams, Snoop Lion(Snoop Dogg), French Montana, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Kim and Waka Flocka does that make her hip hop? They are hip hop; Does she get a pass? Or is it “No New Friends, No, No, New”?
