Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, one of the fastest growing brands in the spirits industry, is celebrating the second year of their popular tour….
The one-of-a-kind mobile studio will spend eight weeks in Houston in search of the country’s top unsigned hip hop talent. The event kicked off last week at Takeover Studios and some of the city’s best and brightest MC’s were on hand, mixing with the crowd and dropping dope bars. HHW caught up with a few of the city’s artists to get their take on the event and also get insight on the local grind. In this installment we chop it up with DeLorean, who recently released the mixtape, Grace.
HHW: We’ve been quietly watching your movement over the past year and a half, tell us a bit about your growth and sticking through it in such competitive business.
DeLorean: It’s definitely a progression. You’ve got to love this and work on it every day. You’ve gotta have the motivation to keep going when there’s nothing being given back — sometimes for years. It took a lot to get me here, and this is just the beginning.
HHW: You’re in an interesting era. Through social media and the web, artists can build their brand online without going the major label route, or they can stick to the script and go major and make it happen that way. Those are options previous generations never had.
DeLorean: Yeah, you can pick your own poison. I want the longevity. Ten years later, I wanna be the next Slim Thug. A lot of people of his era ain’t even poppin’ right now. It’s about being here for the longevity.
HHW: So if you had to choose …
DeLorean: I want a powerful indie company, man. Everything in-house. It ain’t even about making a million dollars to me, I just wanna take care of my family. Bills paid, daughter straight. That’s it. Independently, I can do that and stay sane.
HHW: The indie route is a good way to avoid compromising your music, as well.
Delorean: That’s also a good thing, bro. A lot of people are making trendy music to get poppin’ and what’s been working for me is just being myself. To be yourself and be accepted …. that’s the best feeling ever.
HHW: Career wise, where’s your mind frame as we close out 2013?
Delorean: I’m being patient, bro. I’m working with OG’s and they’re givin’ me game. I’ve worked with Bun B, Slim Thug, Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA, Trae the Truh … I feed off all of them, and they all have longevity.
HHW: Last question — how’s the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey hittin’?
Delorean: I’m a cognac connoisseur, man. I drink Grand Marnier, Hennessy … I f— with some Courvoisier, but this Jack — it’s hittin’. This Jack got me nice.
