Music is forever changing but through the years something has been constant – the DJ. Hardly recognized but ever present, the DJ contributes to both the music and entertainment aspect. The Global Spin Awards has become the Premier DJ Award & Ceremony.
The first ever GSA commencement was held, November 19th, 2012, and has been classified as the Quality Standard of DJ Recognition by music industry executives and tastemakers.
The Global Spin Awards award and honor the world’s most dynamic and talented DJs for their contribution to the culture of music and entertainment.
HHW: So what’s up? You are nominated this year for a Global Spin Award.
DJ INCREDIBOI: Yeah, I am nominated for “Turntablist of the Year.”
HHW: Tell us the difference between the term “turntablist” and DJ.
DJ INCREDIBOI: A turntablist is still a DJ pretty much. There are categories to an extent, like how they break off “club DJs” or “street DJs.” A turntablist is someone who is more hands on with the turn tables and making it into an instrument. It is way more than playing a record- it is scratching and just taking the turn tables to a whole other level. They make the turn table speak for them. It is more technical than anything.
HHW: How did you get to the point where you wanted to be more technical and doing tricks versus being traditional DJ?
DJ INCREDIBOI: That is where I am at in my heart. I grew up working up to club DJs and radio DJs. Coming out of NY that is something that has a lock on the scene. I wouldn’t say there is a huge turntablist scene in NY. As far as what is more on the forefront, it is the radio DJs. I was always into watching music videos and they would scratch, and that made me want to scratch. When I finally got my own set up I would go home and practice scratching. I started there and just moved to more advanced stuff.
HHW: Everybody is jumping on the DJ bandwagon, how can you tell a good DJ from someone just hoppin’ on the hype?
DJ INCREDIBOI: To me I think it is about knowing the music. I feel a lot of the overnight guys who are popping up now are just picking what’s hot now or the last five years, and go on the road with it and do parties. To them I guess it works but I feel like a real DJ can play anywhere. The more you know, the better you are as a DJ. I came up learning all types of music. I was raised on Hip Hop of course but I was also around Latin music. I am Puerto Rican so I learned that type of music, but being from NY I learned so many different types of music. You learn so many different cultures here. Because of that I learned how to play for any group. A real DJ is gonna know how to work that crowd.
HHW: The Global Spin Awards are approaching and are less than 2 weeks away, will you be in attendance?
DJ INCREDIBOI: Definitely. It is something that is extremely important. Shawn Prez, the founder, put this together to finally give us DJs some recognition. Realistically we control what is going on in music, but had never gotten credit. To finally get an award show to acknowledge the work we put in is a beautiful thing and long overdue.
