BJ The Chicago Kid Talks New Album & Contribution to ‘Shots Fired’ with HHW!
A lot has changed for BJ The Chicago Kid since releasing his debut album, In My Mind. Along with the album’s success, BJ has been nominated for a Grammy, wrote the title song for Fox’s hit show “Shots Fired” and is currently working on new music. In part two of our convo, Hip Hop Weekly’s KimSoMajor continues her conversation about BJ’s work with Solange, his contribution to television and more!
KIM SOMAJOR: Nice! You and Solange have been vocal about injustices in the past. “For Us Buy Us (F.U.B.U)” is one of my favorite songs. I definitely respect that whole project and I loved you being on it at the end, especially with the adlibs. What’s your take on R&B music and the direction it’s headed in?
BJ THE CHICAGO KID: It’s growing. It’s continuously developing into something that I think the past has inspired to us be. We’re pretty much products of our environment and what we listen to and what we’re inspired by. That’s what makes it super dope. Believe it or not, Fetty Wap is a singer, you know what I mean? It’s just a different grade; it’s just a different ability to reach further. Some people still hold up on what was done before; some people have what was before still in them with even with having a reinvented style. That’s one part that I actually appreciate. I appreciate the people evolving the game, the game must evolve.
KSM: Definitely, and speaking of evolving and going outside the box, I see that you wrote that title track for the new Fox show “Shots Fired.” Did you already have the song done or you created it with the show in mind because it’s a racially charged show about police shootings and things of that nature?
BJ: Yeah, it’s an incredible writing team that I’m a part of for Shots Fired show in particular. We came together. It’s such an amazing group of people that allows us to kind of freely do it. It was an honor actually to be a part of that writing team because it’s some amazing writers on that team and for me to be involved I think it just made it even sicker. So for them to want me to sing it, I was like ‘yo y’all know I’m with it’. It was the easiest thing in the world.
KSM: That’s dope! Congratulations on that.
BJ: Thank you.
KSM: So we’re halfway through the year almost, what are you looking forward to for the rest of the year?
BJ: Right now, I’m working on another album man. I’m working on this album. That’s where my head is.
KSM: Is “Roses” going to be on the album or was “Roses” that just something you put out on Valentine’s Day?
BJ: I wanted to give them something period just to roll to. You know I can’t let it go too long without giving my people something to rock to.
KSM: OK. Any previews you can give us off the new album? Maybe who you’re working with, a little bit of the vibes that we might get on the album? I know you have a lot of flavors.
BJ: It’s still the beginning phases. We definitely have some cats in the bag but we’re not going to let it out at this phase right now. We’re still creating.
KSM: Cool! Are you going to be at Essence this year? I definitely look forward to seeing you on that stage?
BJ: Thank you and its definitely going to be on!
