HHW caught up with the rising star, who’s radio smash “Too On” has proven to be one of the hottest songs of the summer. Check out an excerpt from our talk, which you can catch in its entirety in the current issue of HHW Mag!!
HHW: You don’t just sing. You’re like a triple, quadruple threat, right? What are some other areas of the entertainment world you dibble and dabble in?
TINASHE: I’ve been dancing since I was four. I was trained in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, all different styles. I was a competitive dancer growing up, I used to be in a company that competed and things like that. So that, and I also acted growing up. Acting was a big part of my life; I was in my first movie when I was five and I did a lot of commercials, TV shows and that felt kind of like an extension of performing and entertaining, so I love to do that as well.
HHW: So your roots in entertainment run very deep. How does it feel when people who are just hearing about you describe you as an overnight success?
TINASHE: Yeah, I think it’s funny. It’s kind of laughable [because] it shows the ignorance and that people kind of haven’t done their research. But I mean, I feel like that’s always the case when there’s a “new artist” or when someone wins Best New Artist at the Grammys. It’s never new, they’ve all been working on it for a long time and there’s a lot more that goes into this than people realize. It’s definitely not easy.
HHW: It’s not just partying and being too on.
TINASHE: Yeah, all that stuff comes later on. It’s years and years of grinding and grinding.
